If you've booked your first Brazilian wax, a little preparation goes a long way toward a smoother, more comfortable appointment. Here's exactly how to prepare for your first Brazilian wax, from hair length to aftercare.
Grow it out — but not too long
Hair should be about a quarter-inch, roughly two to three weeks of growth. If it's too short the wax can't grip it; too long can be more uncomfortable. Resist shaving in between so the timing lines up.
Exfoliate a day or two before
Gently exfoliating one or two days beforehand lifts away dead skin so hair releases cleanly and you're less likely to get ingrown hairs afterward. Skip exfoliating the day of your appointment.
Time it around your cycle
Skin can feel more sensitive right before and during your period. Booking a few days after tends to be more comfortable, though it's entirely up to you.
The day of your appointment
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Cleanse the area beforehand and skip heavy lotions or oils.
- If you're worried about discomfort, an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes prior can help — check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure.
Aftercare and ingrown-hair prevention
For the first 24 hours, avoid hot baths, saunas, intense workouts and direct sun on the area. After a couple of days, resume gentle exfoliation two to three times a week to keep ingrown hairs at bay. Loose cotton clothing helps too.
A quick note
Waxing isn't recommended on broken, irritated or sunburned skin, or if you're using certain prescription retinoids — let us know beforehand and we'll advise. Our Sterling studio serves guests across Northern Virginia, and we're always happy to answer questions before your visit.
